    • Care for diabetic patients

Patients attending our center for the first time are thoroughly assessed by getting information about eating pattern, weight history, exercise history, prior A1C records, details of previous treatment programs, current medications, frequency and severity of acute complications like diabetic ketoacidosis if any, risk factors for atherosclerosis like hypertension, smoking, obesity, hyperlipidemia and family history, contraception and reproductive and sexual history. By completing physical examination and the investigations work up it will be possible to assess the likelihood of any chronic complication. A special attention is given to the patient’s eyes, feet, nervous system and kidneys. During the same initial visit, the patient might be referred to the ophthalmologist, the nutritionist or the diabetic educator whenever needed.
The management plan is individualized taking the patient’s preference into account. Considerations are given to patient’s age, work or school conditions, physical activities, eating patterns and presence of complications of diabetes or other medical conditions.
Additional to the given management plan, patients receive diabetes self-management education as well as education and development of problems-solving skills in the various aspects of diabetes management, then they are scheduled for regular follow up visits for assessment of glycemic control, compliance to life style modification, adjusting or modifying the management plan if needed and continuing the education program.

    • Care for people at risk

Testing asymptomatic people is done routinely for pregnant ladies and for people more than 45 years of age, but at a younger age for overweight persons, particularly when they have one or more out of about 10 risk factors.
